Lyrics

Head was bowed beneath the light,

Hands broke bread, it all felt right.

The hymn began, I believe in Christ,

Tears fell down, I couldn't hide.

Wasn't searching, still He came,

The veil grew thin, He spoke my name.

Silence moved, the Spirit stirred,

Truth I'd never known, but heard.

Faith is born in quiet things,

On sacred ground where heaven sings.

It fills the heart, it clears the view,

It changes me, It changes you

Tried to pray, but words were gone,

At the altar, tears rolled on.

The moment came, I felt Him near,

Peace replaced my every fear.

Stood to speak, my heart unbound,

Ther I stood on holy ground.

Yet wasn't me who made it start,

He wrote His name upon my heart.

Faith is born in quiet things,

On sacred ground where heaven sings.

It fills the heart, it clears the view,

It changes me, it changes you.

I know the hands that stilled the sea,

Were pierced and raised to rescue me.

The King of all, the Great I Am,

The wounded Lord, the spotless Lamb.

He conquered death, the veil was torn,

He reigns in light, my heart reborn.

He lives, He reigns, my soul restored,

Jesus Christ, my Savior, Lord.

Faith is born in quiet things,

On sacred ground where heaven sings.

It fills the heart, it clears the view,

It changes me, it changes you.

He lives, He reigns, my soul restored,

Jesus Christ, my Savior, Lord.

The Story

This song comes from the moment that changed everything for me. Literally, this is the most important song that I will write, and have written. It is the pinnacle of my testimony and the bedrock purpose of my existence. Listen carefully.

I was eighteen years old, sitting on a bench next to where the sacrament is blessed every Sunday in Newbury Park, California. I had not been praying consistently. I wasn't and hadn't been asking God for anything. I was just there out of parentally embedded habits of life. Go to church on Sunday. That's just what I do.

The opening hymn was I Believe in Christ. I sang the first five words and immediately broke down. Completely. My chest burned. My heart raced. I cried uncontrollably for nearly forty five minutes. Something was happening inside me that I could not explain away.

I knew in that moment that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world. Not as an idea. Not as something I had been taught. As knowledge. It was placed in me. It became an absolute, pure, SURE KNOWLEDGE, of who Christ is and his relationship with me.

This song follows that experience exactly as it happened. The music builds the way that moment built. The strings mirror the rhythm of my heartbeat as everything intensified. The final section reflects the moment I stood during fast and testimony meeting and said out loud what I knew to be true.

That bench is sacred ground to me. Not because of the building, but because of what happened there. That was the moment Christ chose me. I was not seeking Him. He reached for me. That experience became the foundation of everything I believe.
